Why am I suddenly getting so many spam emails?

Your address has probably turned up in a data breach or been scraped from a website, and it's been added to lists that get sold on. It's not something you did. If the spam is explicit, we've written about adult spam specifically. If it's hundreds of newsletter signups in an hour, that's an email bomb and it's hiding something.

Should I unsubscribe from spam emails?

Unsubscribe from real companies, yes. For anything that looks like spam, no. The link often just confirms that your address is read by a real person. The Unsubscriber tells the difference for you, and the Spam Blocker handles the ones you shouldn't click.

Does marking as spam actually work?

It helps your provider learn about that one sender. It doesn't help with the next address the same spammer uses, and it doesn't make the filter any stricter for you personally. That's the gap the Spam Blocker fills.

Does it report senders to my email provider?

No. Blocked email is moved to a separate blocked folder in your account. Your provider never gets a report, and the sender gets no signal that your address is real.
