6 signs it is time to unsubscribe from an email list

Email has become an essential part of our daily lives, both personally and professionally. However, with the increase in the number of email lists we subscribe to, it can be challenging to keep up with the influx of messages.

According to Statista, the number of e-mails sent and received globally has increased each year since 2017. In 2021, there were an estimated 319.6 billion e-mails sent and received daily around the world. This figure is projected to increase to 376.4 billion daily e-mails by 2025.

A lot of those emails sent daily are marketing and sales emails by brands and companies, like Amazon, Etsy, Walmart, or Nike that clutter your inbox and waste your time.

To cut down on clutter, you may want to unsubscribe from emails you no longer want to receive, or unsolicited emails you never signed up to receive.

Here are six signs to look for:

1.You don't remember subscribing to the list.

If you don't remember subscribing to an email list, it's likely that the emails you're receiving are unsolicited. This could happen if you signed up for a free trial or a service that required you to provide your email address, and you didn't notice the pre-checked opt-in box. In such cases, it's best to unsubscribe immediately, as these emails can often be spam.

2. The emails are irrelevant to your interests.

If you find that the emails you're receiving are no longer relevant to your interests, it's a sign that it's time to unsubscribe. Perhaps you signed up for a newsletter that you were initially interested in, but the content has shifted or become less valuable over time. Or, maybe the company has changed its focus, and the emails are no longer relevant to your needs.

3. You're receiving too many emails.

If you find yourself bombarded with emails from a particular sender, it's time to unsubscribe. Too many emails can be overwhelming and distracting, taking up valuable time and mental energy that could be better spent elsewhere. Moreover, if the emails are not providing you with any value, then they're just a distraction.

4. The emails are too salesy.

While it's understandable that companies want to promote their products or services, it can be a turn-off when emails are too salesy. If you find that the emails you're receiving are too pushy, it's time to unsubscribe. Nobody wants to be constantly bombarded with sales pitches, and it can be a red flag that the company is more interested in making a sale than providing value to its subscribers.

5. If emails look like phishing.

Phishing emails are a type of scam that aims to steal sensitive information, such as passwords, credit card numbers, and other personal data. If you receive an email that looks like phishing, take the necessary steps to protect yourself and report the phishing email to your email provider or the appropriate authorities.

6. You've tried to unsubscribe, but it's not working.

If you've tried to unsubscribe from an email list, but you're still receiving emails, it's time to take more drastic action. You can mark the emails as spam, which will help your email provider filter them out in the future. Additionally, you can use unsubscribing services like Leave Me Alone.
